Why You Need a Team to Help You Find Your Truth & Wisdom!

En route to making great change and creating new pathways through life’s major transitions, we must recognize that we cannot do it alone. The path is rocky and unsteady, filled with fear, doubt, and insecurity. The truth is that I could never have sustained all that it took to heal and learn to love myself if I were alone in my journey. It was possible because I had a strong and supportive healing team.

We all need each other—in fact, Brené Brown’s research in her book Daring Greatly teaches us that connection is one of the main drives for all human behavior. We want to be connected with others, and not just as Facebook friends, but deeply connected in a way that supports our ups and downs, our face-plants and triumphs along the way. Assembling a healing team, or joining a community where the intention is to grow together and support one another unconditionally, is a great way to do just that.

The first time I experienced the power of a healing team was when I was part of a women’s group after graduate school. This group’s intention was brought forth from a friend who had participated in Native American circles where simple ritual and the circle itself created a soft and sacred place to share from the heart. The only rules were no cross-talking, judgment, gossip, advice or criticism. Speak your truth, if you wanted, and listen. The women’s group saw me through the hardest times of my life, when I was rumbling deeply with change—providing me a place to be in connection with others in a deep and meaningful way. A place to hold all of me.

We not only came together during our monthly gatherings, but we supported one another with phone calls, girls nights out, and weekends in the woods, during times of personal crises, challenge and celebration. This experience of being fully seen, without judgment, was new to me, and has imprinted so deeply on me that to this day I am never without a team of incredible humans in my life.

I know I cannot grow, learn and heal myself by myself. I need support—to be heard, held, encouraged, unconditionally loved, laughed with, taken down to the river at full moon for a good howl. I need to be surrounded by people who ask meaningful questions, turn towards hardship to grow on purpose, and share from their hearts in good times and bad. It is here, in these sacred circles, that I know I am not alone and it is just this shared human experience that allows me to find my own truth—to grow and to fly.

Sonia Karumsi and I have created the “Discover Your Truth: The Woman’s Midlife Experience” for just this purpose. We know, deep in our bones, that we need each other to see ourselves through difficult times. If you are facing the challenges of midlife and you are craving community and want to join this Healing Team—we’re here for you!
